The main methods used to create multiple personal sound zones are optimisation processes involving conflicting objective functions. The two most common methods, Acoustic Contrast Control (ACC) and Pressure Matching (PM), aim to simultaneously optimise various objectives: the system performance in terms of reproduction error, the amount of acoustic energy in the so-called bright zones and dark zones, and the amount of energy required by the system to obtain the desired performance (the array effort). In this work, the general framework of multi-objective optimisation and the main techniques employed to solve this class of problems are firstly introduced. Then, it is shown that all the methods developed in the last 40 years in the field of personal sound zone systems are special cases of theses general multi-objective techniques.
